Queenstown to Dunedin and The Catlins
Queenstown to Dunedin and The Catlins
It's the Southern Scenic Route baby. Pick up your Wicked Camper from our depot in Queenstown and hit the road towards Dunedin and the magnificent Catlins ranges. The journey between Queenstown and Dunedin is approximately 610 kilometres of natural beauty, with cultural attractions laid out one after the other. Explore deserted beaches, lush rainforest, pristine lakes and stunning mountain vistas.
Check out the vibrant city of Dunedin
The Southern Scenic Route is New Zealand’s oldest touring route and essential for your Wicked Roadtrip. Rich in culture and heritage, Dunedin is an exciting student city with a vibrant identity.
Spend a few hours admiring the collections at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, catch the Tajeri Gorge Railway or visit the Olveston Historic Home for a glimpse of Dunedin during the Edwardian times. Check out Lamach Castle (New Zealand’s only castle), take a tour of Speights Brewery (the South Island’s favourite beer) or visit Otago Museum – one of the oldest and largest museum in New Zealand.
Not forgetting Cadbury World, Dunedin Botanic Gardens and many of the spectacular beaches on offer. There is a shit load of stuff do in Dunedin!
Explore the vast and beautiful ranges of The Catlins
Comprising the forest ranges, farmland and rugged coastline bounded by the Mataura and Clutha Rivers, The Catlins are an essential destination during your time on the South Island.
Best explored over a number of days due to its sheer size, the largely unspoilt coastline and bush provide a precious haven for wildlife. Many species of animals, insects, plants and fish found here are now rare or endangered. To some extent, The Catlins best represent New Zealand as it was hundreds of years ago.
Boasting an untouched coastline, awesome surf beaches, forest and coastal walks, penguins, sexy fucking seals and a shit load of birds.
Experience Invercargill, the ‘real’ New Zealand
Time to really unwind and chill out for a bit. Invercargill, known for its laid back, no hustle living is an easy city to explore.
Venture into Queens Park and take a whiff of the beautiful roses. Legend has it that you can actually get high off the aroma (look out for the slightly darker shades of red). The museum here is home to some interesting artefacts, as well as live tuatara lizards…awesome.
Just north of the city, Anderson Park is a 24-hectare estate with a Georgian residence at its centre. If you enjoy a good painting as much as I do, check out the Anderson Park Art Gallery, exhibiting quality art from the far south of New Zealand. Local food specialities include oysters and blue cod. No mention of Hawaiian pizza though, beats me.
Soak up the extraordinary beauty of Fiordland
Achieving World Heritage Status with its thirteen fiords, (notably Milford Sound being the most famous), Fiordland is a truly unique environment to explore. Drive to Fiordland in your Wicked Camper and visit one of the most beautiful and dramatic parts of New Zealand. A perfect location for enjoying outdoor activities, or simply kick back and chill the fuck out.
Fiordland is the largest National Park in New Zealand, covering 1.2 million hectares. Avid hikers take note – Fiordland is also the walking capital of the world. Te Anau and Manapouri are the main towns within the region, just 2 hours if you’re driving from Queenstown or Invercargill.
Cruise through in your Wicked Camper, breathe in that fresh air and take in views of countless lakes, rivers, streams and waterfalls. It’s beautiful out here man, live it up.
